Malaysia has made much progress in developing its Halal industry. It is already
recognized as an international Halal center that generates significant trade of Halal
products and offers Halal industry players with a wide range of infrastructures, facilities, services and institutional support to facilitate Halal industry players and Halal trade.
Malaysia has spelled out its intention to become a global Halal hub to act as a gateway
for all things Halal. However, competition is rising from other nations to grab a slice of the pie of the lucrative Halal trade. To retain leadership in the Halal industry, Malaysia must improve on the capacity and services to support more Halal business and greater
Halal trade volume, especially in the maritime sector which facilitates much of its
international trade.
This paper identifies if the Syaria compliance airport is a lucrative business to
establish. The paper argues that the profitability of Syaria compliance airport and the demand of the Muslim friendly facilities while proposing the replacement of the nonhalal business model. As Malaysia already done well to emerge as an international Halal
hub, it needs to move up the value chain to provide high-end, value-added services such
as accreditation, certification, R&D, training and high-end logistics services to serve a
wider market. It concludes by stating that Malaysia already has many of the ingredients
to become a world leader in the Halal industry but needs to harness them further and continuously enhance and improve its capacity and competencies to serve the growing global need for Halal products and services. |
