Abstract: This paper presents the application of Taguchi method to determine the optimum surface quality of the spheroidal graphite cast iron in a CNC face milling operation. Three milling cutting parameters namely cutting speed, feed-per-tooth, and depth-of-cut were taken as control factors. Each factor has three levels. A Taguchi L 9 orthogonal array was used to obtain the proper experiment numbers and cutting combinations. The optimal cutting combination was determined by seeking the best surface roughness (response) and signal-to-noise ratio. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out in order to identify the significant factors affecting surface. Finally, confirmation tests verified that the Taguchi design was successful in optimizing milling parameters for surface roughness.
