This research presents a comparative study on two types of coolants performance through experimental investigation in the surface grinding of conventional grinding machine. Cooling methods used in this experimental were flooding of 640 coolant and 700 coolant. Cutting fluids are used in machining for a variety of reasons such as improving tool life, reducing work piece thermal deformation, improving surface finish. Different sets of experiments were performed to study the effects of the independent cutting parameters such as feed and depth of cut on dependent performance criteria such as surface finish. An effective coolant was sought in this study to analyze the condition of surface roughness using mild steel material. The results showed that the 700 coolant presents better performance on surface roughness, although not necessarily the grinding parameter. Further, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to investigation the results from surface roughness. From the analysis, it is observed that cutting fluids is the most significant factor on the surface roughness followed by cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut at 95% confidence level. These research findings provide useful economic machining solution in term of optimized coolant user for conventional grinding machine. Extensive research has been carried out to predict the surface roughness of the work piece manufactured by grinding. |
