Abstract:
This report presents the numerical simulation of the impingement heat transfer enhancement of a synthetic jet driven by piston actuator on a constant heat flux surface for electronic cooling applications. This arrangement utilizes a pulsating fluid jet mechanism known as synthetic jet, one of the technologies for enhancing heat exchange between the electronic package and the ambient. The effects of excitation frequency, conjugate action of cross flow and orifice length on the heater surface are explored. Computational fluid dynamic software on ANSYS platform was used for simulation by utilizing the 3-dimensional actuator model developed using CATIA while the structured mesh on the model were generated using GAMBIT mesh generation facility. The results indicate that the synthetic jet produces fairly big velocity at higher operating frequency, thus lead to stronger penetration in the surrounding fluid and higher heat transfer capacity on the surface. The convective heat transfer capacity is significantly enhanced under the conjugate action of a synthetic jet and cross flow, the interaction between both delivers an effective cooling ability that supersedes the fan driven air reliability. With longest orifice length, the cooling of the heater surface were enhanced and the results of the simulation are expected to be useful for understanding the effects of excitation frequency, conjugate action of cross flow and orifice length
