Abstract: It is well known fact that by using water as a cutting media will hinder the pollution into the environment and cost effective make a water jet cutter is widely used in an industry. The water jet cutter is the industrial tool capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using a very high pressure jet of water. However, the high pressure water jet is suitable to cut hard materials. In case of cutting soft materials, the application of high pressure water jet is wasting and the invention of a portable water jet cutter is valuable. In that case, the hand water jet cutter is invented to perform the cutting process of soft materials using a low pressure water jet. Based on the invention, a research on the water jet flow is made to investigate the output speed of the system. Twelve types of nozzle design are simulated using the finite element method and the input pressure of the system is set up to 100 lb/in². Through the simulation, the design that consist of cutting head with 160 mm length, 10 mm inlet diameter and inlet angle of 5° and orifice with 2 mm length, 1 mm outlet diameter and inlet angle of 30° has produce the highest average output speed which is 21.516 m/s. The other research made for this invention is a static simulation of material applies for the nozzle. Al - alloy 1060 is applies as the material for the nozzles based on its material property. Based on the ANSI38 standard, the yield strength of Al- alloy is 4000 lb/in² which is suitable to withstand the applied 100 lb/in² of water pressure. The static simulation result shown that the FOS of the nozzle design when Al-alloy 1060 being applied is 19. This value showed that the design is capable to perform the cutting process without any fracture. According to the results and finding, we hope this invention can perform the cutting process successfully and capable to cut the soft material without any problems.
