Abstract: This paper presents the possibility of using adsorption chiller in residential building for the tropical climate, especially in Malaysia. A silica gel-water adsorption chiller mathematical model was developed. This chiller was supplied with constant temperatures of hot and cool water. The range of temperature of heat source (hot water) is either 70 °C or 80 °C, which could be achieved through solar thermal collectors. Adsorption data of water onto silica gel were taken from the published data in literature. To produce 5 kW of cooling power, it was estimated that the adsorption chiller should has 16 kg of silica gel. Best and worst operation conditions were simulated in this paper. It can be concluded that adsorption chiller could be used in Malaysia, as an alternative to the vapour compression cooling system.
