Abstract: This paper presents a study on the thermal distribution at cylinder head region of a dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) engine using the analytical Finite Element Method approach. The construction of the 3D model is mainly focuse on the cylinder head. The component includes water jackets, oil gallery, intake port and exhaust port. The fuel type is Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Internal nodal temperature of cylinder head body is taken as approximately 2327°C to represent occurrence of CNG combustion. The presence of the cooling action is modeled by assigning convection coefficient on the cooling jacket. Material information and its isotropic properties is set as default comprises of the general material data that is used in ANSYS 14.0. The transient heat transfer analysis is carried out at the instant of combustion. The computed temperature gradient at the crucial parts were plotted and analysed. Based on simulation result, the thermal distribution in the cylinder head is high where the location of the high thermal stress on the cylinder head is mostly spreading around the combustion chamber and the exhaust port. This means that the metal fatigue occur in the effect area.
