Title: Effect of Machining Parameter on Chip Formation and Tool Life during Turning INCONEL 718 Under MQL

Abstract: Cutting fluids have long been used in machining processes to decease the temperature during machining by spraying the coolant into the machining zone directly on the cutting tool and the part. This has the effect of decreasing the tool temperature, which increases tool life and improves the part quality. However, cutting fluids are environmentally unfriendly, costly, and potentially toxic. The recent shift to dry cutting has not completely solved the problem. Dry cutting increases energy costs, increases per part costs, and requires a capital investment that is too large for most machine shops. This paper deals with experimental investigations in the role of MQL on chip formation during turning Inconel 718 at different cutting parameters by cutting speed 90m/min, 120m/min and 150m/min, depth of cut 0.3 and 0.5mm and feed of rate of 0.1mm/rev and0.15mm/rev. Chip formations in term of general chip form, Material Removal Rate (MRR), chip classification base on ISO and tool life were evaluated. It was also noted that the chip–tool interaction become more favorable under MQL condition. Therefore, it appears that MQL, if properly employed, not only provides environment friendliness but can also improve the machinability characteristics.
