Abstract: In today’s world, power saving is very important and difficult. Though there are many power generation methods, it has become very difficult due to insufficient resources. So, saving of power is the need for our society. A Street light, lamppost, street lamp, light standard, or lamp standard is a raised source of light on the edge of a road or walkway, which is turned on or lit at a certain time every night. Major advantages of street lighting includes prevention of accidents and increase in safety. Hence, the Development of Smart Street Lighting System is about how power can be saved in street lights and reduce the period to give maintenance for the faulty lamp. The system comprises three features: 1. It switches the streetlight OFF during day time and ON during night time. 2. It controls the intensity of the street light by dimming and brightening the intensity on detection of any object. 3. Information about failure of bulbs is sent to the authorities in the form of a message using GSM technology. This paper presents a street light control system which combines various technologies: a timer, IR sensor, Light Emitting Diodes (LED), GSM module, LDR sensor. IR Sensors used on either sides of the road send logic commands for the LEDs at the output to get glowing. Intensity control is also possible by pulse width modulation based on sensing the movement and density of vehicles. Thus this way of dynamically changing intensity or off to on helps in saving a lot of energy. A programmable Arduino is engaged to provide different duty cycle for different intensities at different density conditions.
