Authors: Muhammad Afiq Asbar Bin Harun
Issue Date: 5-Nov-2014
Abstract: In this research, the tensile testing methods was used to test the sustainability of the materials to determine the appropriate number of rows of rivet to be applied on the materials in order to sustain the load. The number of rows of rivet is important in the aviation industry because it need to able to sustain the aircraft operation load. A slight mistake of the quantity of the rivet can cause catastrophic accident. The number of rows is being analysis in term of the calculation and testing conducted. The type of failure and calculation necessary to determine the failure is also important to identified the failure that will happen first during the stress applied and what the cause for the failure to happen. Chapter 1 in this research outline the aim of the research. This research aim is to analysis the sustainability of the aluminium sheet lap joint with different number of the rows of rivet by using tensile testing. The sustainability of different rows of rivet on the lap joint was studied. This research also studied the behaviours of the failures that will happen during the analysis is conducted. The objective and the hypothesis for this research are concluding based on what the outcome of the research. Chapter 2 provides a literature review from previous studies that will help in order to achieve the research objective. The literature review provides the information on the fabrication of the specimens, the procedure of the testing, the properties of materials being used, and the hypothesis of what the outcome results based on the previous studies. For this research, ASTM and MIL-HDBK-5J gives massive information in order to conduct the research. Some previous research such as Leo A. Mayer, Sheet Metal and Andrzej Skorupa Malgorzata, Riveted Lap Joint in Aircraft Fuselage gives an outline guidance to help with this research. The methodology and process flow to conduct this research were presented in chapter 3. The process, the fabrication, the tool used, and the testing method is described in the chapter 3 that acted as a guidance for future researcher. Chapter 4 provides the results after the testing is conducted. The specimens with different number of rows of rivet which are one row, two row, three rows and four rows is vii tested by using a tensile testing machine Shimadzu Ag-X and the results of the outcome is in present in the graphical method. The calculation is also involved in this chapter in order to provide proves based on the results outcome. This chapter also present the failure that happen on the specimens based on the calculation. Chapter 4 also is where the discussion regarding the result is discussed. The discussion on the behaviour of the failure and error happen during the testing is present in this chapter. Based on the conclusion derived from chapter 5, this research concluded that the increasing number of rows of rivet is better to sustain the load. The failure happen also can be conclude by referring to the lowest allowable fastener load based on the calculation. Even though this research failed to prove the hypothesis, a new knowledge is gain by the outcomes of the errors which is the bearing failure.
