Title: Design And Development Of Non Planar Wing (Box Wing)
Authors: Mohammad Ikhwan Bin Karim
Issue Date: 17-Sep-2015
Abstract: Non planar wing such as box wing is said that it can be an alternative of efficient way in saving space in the hangar with a shorter wing span. Besides that, the box wing is supposed to help in increasing the efficiency of the lift and reducing the induced drag. Thus, saving the fuel consumption and cost. The commercial aircraft manufacturer such as Boeing and Airbus producing the typical transport aircraft with the planar wing to the airline but the bigger the aircraft is, the more space needed for the aircraft to be park in the hangar. Bigger aircraft takes up a lot of space with its body and wing span and carefully park in the hangar as not to collide with other aircraft. This research was carried out to analysed and understand the concept of the non planar wing and its efficiency. The box wing design has been chosen and be compared with the equivalent of monoplane of the same wing span. The induced drag reduction theory is highlighted and the concept is aerodynamically investigated through several geometric parameters.
