Abstract:
Product quality is one of the crucial criteria for the evaluation of turning process. However, heat generated in the
cutting zone during machining might deteriorates the surface quality especially because of the tool wear. Due to the
environmental restrictions on the use of cutting fluids, there is a greater need to identify the eco-friendly and user-
friendly alternatives. The present work features a specific study on the application of graphite powder as solid
lubricant in turning of S45C mild steel. The process performance is judged in terms of tool wear and surface
roughness. Experimental results obtained are encouraging, showing the effectiveness of the use of the solid lubricant
as a viable alternative to dry and wet machining.
